The World SIM card requires an unlocked phone. The cell phone must support an unlocked GSM 900/1800/1900 or a GSM 850/900/1800/1900 compatible cell phone. World cell phones that will work are Nokia 1280 and Nokia C2-01. North America and parts of Latin and South America require support for 850/1900, while the rest of the world operates on 900/1800, with the exception of Japan and South Korea which use UMTS 1900/2100. The Nokia 1280 is a dual-band cell phone and will not work in USA, Canada and 19 other countries. Take a Nokia 2700 if you are going to countries that are not supported by the Nokia 1280. Going to Japan or South Korea? You will need the Nokia C2-01.
